The History of Vans Shoes and Clothing

Vans (previously known as the Van Doren Rubber Company) was founded in 1966 by Paul Van Doren, his brother James, and Gordon C. Lee. The trio was in the business of creating shoes, which they sold through their brick-and-mortar store. On the store’s opening day, they offloaded twelve pairs of Vans deck shoes.

Four years later, James’s son designed the Vans skateboard logo, and it was his interest in the sport that led the company to start manufacturing skateboarding shoes. In 1976, Vans began using the ‘Off the Wall’ slogan, derived from slang used by skateboarders when doing tricks in empty pools.

Over time, the brand's shoes began to break into the pop-culture world, with celebrities being spotted wearing them. Notably, actor Sean Penn popularised the brand by wearing a pair of Vans checkerboard slip-ons in his role in the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Decades after the company’s debut, Vans continues to be in the limelight, with the popular internet meme ‘Damn, Daniel’ going viral, providing major visibility for the brand.
